UK approves Pfizer, AZ vaccines as booster shots

The United Kingdom Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) stated on Thursday that the coronavirus vaccines developed by Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE, and AstraZeneca can safely be used as booster doses.

The agency's Chief Executive Dr. June Raine noted that the vaccines are "safe and effective" booster doses, adding that this regulatory change will ensure that the vaccines are used in the most effective way possible. Moreover, she noted that the ongoing safety surveillance of the COVID-19 jabs in the UK will now include the booster jabs.

It is now up to the Joint Committee on Vaccination (JCVI) and Immunisation to decide when the booster vaccination program will begin, if at all, as well as which vaccines will be used in that program.
