The United Kingdom Department of Health and Social Care announced that it would not rule out re-introducing economic and social restrictions if it was necessary to contain or suppress the Indian variant of the coronavirus.

The announcement came as part of the latest measures that are designed to boost the government's response to the variant, which UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he was "anxious" about. The new measures include surge testing in areas where the variant was identified, working to help individuals with self-isolation, as well as possibly bringing forward second doses of vaccines for eligible groups.

Health and Social Care Secretary commented on the measures saying: "We are committed to working with local areas and deploying our world-leading genomic sequencing to get this variant under control. We are supporting areas where the cases of this variant are rising. We are monitoring the situation very carefully and will not hesitate to take further action if necessary."
