The United States' major stock markets closed lower on Tuesday as investors evaluated the economic recovery pace. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the stimulus bill prevented "severe scaring" of the economy, so she expects full employment by 2022. At the same event, IMF's Kristalina Georgieva noted that thanks to the relief provided by the US, global economic recovery is progressing, although unevenly.

Meanwhile, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed a very slight increase in job openings and hires, compared to the month prior, with the educational sector showing a drop in numbers.

Dow Jones fell 0.29% with Walgreens Boots Alliance dropping by 1.94%. The S&P 500 closed 0.10% in the red, while the Nasdaq 100 lost 0.14%, both led by Paychex plummeting 4.92%. The euro gained 0.52% against the dollar trading for $1.18741 at 4:05 pm ET.
