Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO mentioned in his Twitter replies on Friday that the company is interested in launching its electric vehicle sales in India, but the import duties are very high. Musk said he's hopeful that the Indian government would temporarily introduce a tariff relief for EVs.

Tesla's founder also said that should the imported vehicles succeed on the Indian market, the company is likely to build a local factory.

"We want to do so [launch cars in India], but import duties are the highest in the world by far of any large country! Moreover, clean energy vehicles are treated the same as diesel or petrol, which does not seem entirely consistent with the climate goals of India," Musk tweeted.
