Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been reelected with 95.1% of the popular vote, state news outlet Sana reported on Thursday. Speaker of the People’s Assembly Hammouda Sabbagh stated 14,239,140 Syrians voted in the presidential election, representing 78.64% of the total electorate.

This is Assad's fourth term in office. He came to power in 2000, after the death of his father, Hafez al-Assad. The international community condemned the electoral process, calling it "illegitimate." Assad dismissed the criticism, stating the foreign powers' "opinions are worth nothing."
