COVID passports to be released next month in the UK - report

Certificates for those that have been vaccinated or COVID passports are planned to be issued next month in the United Kingdom to those wishing to travel internationally, the Telegraph reported late Wednesday.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the UK travel industry was reportedly told by government officials that the passport would start being used before international restarts, which according to an earlier report is slated to be May 17. Furthermore, the passport should be accepted by other international countries as it would be a document certified by the UK government, therefore allowing passengers to bypass tests and quarantine measures.

The report comes amid uncertainty on international travel for British people with the government saying they are making tentative progress on it, despite the easing of domestic coronavirus restrictions. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson called for patience when it comes to travelling abroad. A version of vaccine certificates is also being looked at within the European Union.
