US: Elections in Russia were not free, fair

Monday, 20. September 2021 18:05

The United States Department of State remarked on Monday the elections for Russia's State Duma that took place between September 17 and 19 were held "under conditions not conducive to free and fair proceedings."

"The Russian government's use of laws on 'extremist organizations,' 'foreign agents,' and 'undesirable organizations' severely restricted political pluralism and prevented the Russian people from exercising their civil and political rights," its statement read. "We call upon Russia to honor its international obligations to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms and end its pressure campaign on civil society, the political opposition, and independent media."

Earlier in the day, Russia's Central Election Commission announced President Vladimir Putin's party United Russia won 49.6% votes in the latest elections.
