FTC charges Broadcom with illegal monopolization

The United States Federal Trade Commission on Friday charged Broadcom Inc. with illegally monopolizing semiconductor components markets.

The FTC complaint alleges that the company is illegally maintaining its power in the monopolized markets by entering long-term exclusivity and loyalty agreements with manufacturers and service providers, thereby preventing them from purchasing chips from Broadcom's competitors.

"Today's complaint reflects the Commission's commitment to enforcing the antitrust laws against monopolists, including in high-technology industries," Bureau of Competition Acting Director Holly Vedova said, noting that the complaint "is a step toward addressing that problem by pushing back against strong-arm tactics by a monopolist in important markets for key broadband components."
