The United Kingdom Competition and Markets Authority announced on Friday that it has opened a formal probe into Amazon.com Inc. and Google LLC over their failure to combat fake reviews on their websites.

The watchdog stated that it is investigating whether the companies broke consumer law by not taking enough actions to stem the flow of fake reviews. Additionally, the regulator identified specific concerns with the companies inactions, ranging from not imposing adequate sanctions on reviewers or businesses found to have posted fake or misleading reviews to not investigating or detecting suspicious patterns of behavior of reviewers.

Lastly, the CMA is also looking into whether sellers on Amazon manipulated product listings by taking positive reviews from other products, stating that misleading and fake reviews can have a detrimental impact on how businesses and products are presented to consumers.
