S. Korean court rules against Netflix in usage fee row

Friday, 25. June 2021 07:46

South Korea's court sided on Friday against Netflix Inc. in its dispute with the country's internet access provider SK Broadband Inc. over the issue of paying network usage fees.

The ruling comes following failed mediation attempts in April, as SK Broadband wanted Netflix to share the costs of maintaining heavy data traffic on its network, which is partly due to the rise in popularity of streaming services. The court dismissed Netflix's claims that it was not liable to pay network usage fees, as well as the streaming giants assertations that it had no need to negotiate with the access provider.

Netflix has around four million subscribers in South Korea, and the streaming giants' next steps following the ruling are currently unknown.
