Europe closes mixed after earnings releases

European markets closed mixed on Thursday, following releases of earnings reports earlier in the morning, including AXA, Deutsche Telekom, Barclays and Anglo American. Market watchers also focused on economic data released in the United Kingdom, where gross domestic product (GDP) rose 0.4% in the fourth quarter of 2017, according to preliminary estimates. UK retail sales growth showed slower pace, while the outlook remained optimistic.

The FTSE 100 was down 0.40% at the end of the session, with BAE Systems and British American Tobacco leading the losses, falling 2.56% and 2.43%, respectively.

DAX lost 0.07% at the closing bell. The biggest loser was Deutsche Telekom AG, dropping 2.37%, after earnings data release.

The main French index CAC 40 was up 0.13% as the trading day ended, with the energy sector leading the gains.

The euro was 0.32% higher against the dollar to go for 1.2329 at 5:53 pm CET, while the pound gained 0.17% versus the greenback to sell for 1.3944 at 5:55 pm CET.
