Volkswagen says name change was marketing stunt

Volkswagen said the company is not planning on changing its name in the United States and that the information was leaked as a marketing stunt to attract attention to its electric vehicle launch.

"The renaming was designed to be an announcement in the spirit of April Fool's Day, highlighting the launch of the all-electric ID.4 SUV and signaling our commitment to bringing electric mobility to all," Volkswagen said in a statement.

The news of the rebranding came from a release that was posted on the company's website which several media outlets picked up. It indicated that the automaker plans to start going by Voltswagen in the US and that an exterior badge with the new name will be affixed to all of the company's electric cars.
