Volkswagen to change name in US to Voltswagen - report

Tuesday, 30. March 2021 01:05

Volkswagen is considering changing its name in the United States to Voltswagen, The Associated Press reported citing a person familiar with the matter.

The formal announcement is planned for Tuesday, according to the media outlet, and the rebranding will not cover the Volkswagen Group of America, which includes Audi, Bentley, Bugatti and Lamborghini. The exterior badge with the new name is said to be placed on all of the company's electric-powered vehicles, while its gas vehicles will still have the symbol VW.

The company is likely looking to distance itself from what is often referred to as the "diesel emissions scandal," which surfaced in 2015. After pleading guilty to three felonies for cheating on emission tests, the automaker was fined $4.3 billion in 2017 by the US and $1.5 billion by Germany.
