Pentagon spokesman Major Chris Mitchell stated during a briefing on Friday that Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin approved a request to provide 100 National Guard troops for assistance in protecting the Washington DC Capitol complex during the "Justice for J6" protests on September 18.

"The task force will only be deployed upon request of the Capitol Police to help protect the U.S. Capitol Building and Congressional Office buildings by manning building entry points and verifying credentials of individuals seeking access to the building," DOD statement said.

US Capitol was fenced on Thursday in an effort to protect the building from potential outbursts of violence. The rally is aimed at protesting the criminal charges for attacking the Capitol on January 6.
