Stricter laws for foreign IT firms in Russia needed - official

Russia's State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin (pictured) stated on Saturday that stricter legislative regulation for foreign tech companies in Russia was needed.

Volodin stated that "foreign companies had the opportunity to take the path of self-regulation" but because they didn't new regulation was necessary. Furthermore, he asserted that introducing economic measures of "coercion", was the only way to force the tech companies to comply saying that "that kind of 'language' is well understood by Western companies, for which profit is the main thing."

Russia has had a tumultuous relationship with tech giants lately, with Twitter Inc.'s traffic speed is still limited, Alphabet Inc.'s Google agreeing to comply with all demands made by the Duma, and YouTube under an anti-monopoly investigation.
