Alphabet Inc's Google announced on Tuesday that it plans to build a commercially available error-corrected quantum computer by 2029.

"As we look into the future, there are types of problems that classical computing will not be able to solve in a reasonable time. Quantum computing represents a fundamental shift," said Google's Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai at the Google Developer Conference as he unveiled a new data center called the Quantum AI Campus in Santa Barbara County.

The company hopes the new technology will eventually facilitate the creation of more sustainable energy, more energy-efficient batteries, better discovery of new drugs and allow error-free computation of large-scale business and scientific calculations.
