Shares on the major stock market indexes in the United States started the session mostly below the flatline on Wednesday as the investors awaited the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee's decision regarding the key interest rates, and its subsequent press conference.

On the corporate earnings front, Microsoft and Alphabet reported upbeat results the day before, which prompted Alphabet's stocks to jump at the opening bell and reach a new all-time high. Two other technology giants, Apple and Facebook, are scheduled to post their financial reports after the closing bell.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 0.24% as the session started, only to extend losses and drop almost 150 points minutes into the trading bout. Despite optimistic earnings, Microsoft was among the index's worst performers, with a 3.03% drop 2 minutes into the session. The Nasdaq 100 was down by 0.07% at the opening bell as Amgen lost 5.12% a minute later. The S&P 500 gained 0.12% at the open with Alphabet jumping 5.19% a minute into the session. Shortly after the open, the benchmark hit a record high. The euro dipped 0.18% versus the dollar, selling for 1.20687 at 9:32 am ET.
