Asian markets mixed as trade remains in focus

Markets in Asia traded mixed on Monday as investors continued to focus on the trade relations between the United States and China. The two sides continued phone negotiations over the weekend after signals from American officials that a so-called phase one trade agreement with Beijing is likely to be reached. Meanwhile, anti-government protests in Hong Kong continued with further violent clashes between demonstrators and the police.

The Nikkei 225 rose 0.27% at 3:29 am CET. The dollar traded flat against the yen to sell for 108.7985 at 3:30 am CET.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng jumped 1.03% at 3:30 am CET. In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite lost 0.07% at 3:31 am CET, while the Shenzhen Composite traded flat at 3:18 am CET.

In South Korea, the Kospi fell 0.38% at 3:34 am CET and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 declined 0.55% at the same time.
