Market participants were looking for direction for equities on Monday ahead of the official start of trading as the Conservative Party was about to elect the new leader. Boris Johnson, who enjoys a substantial advantage in polls, and Jeremy Hunt are competing for the position which would make them the next prime minister instead of Theresa May. Focus was also on the dispute with Iran over captured tankers. In other news, Italy's government is in a crisis as the Northern League, the junior partner in the ruling coalition, is threatening to break it up, accusing the Five Star Movement of obstruction.

The euro was flat at $1.12188 at 8:55 am CET and just 0.05% down at £0.89701. The pound was barely changed at $1.25056. Gold advanced 0.08% to $1.426.36.
