UK finds 'competition concerns' in NVIDIA's Arm acquisition

The United Kingdom Competitions and Market Authority (CMA) stated on Friday that the acquisition of Arm Holdings by NVIDIA Corp raised "competition concerns."

The watchdog noted that if the takeover happened NVIDIA would have the ability and incentive to restrict the access of Arm's products, which are used in semiconductor chips, to its rivals. This, the regulator concluded, could lead to a loss of competition and a drop in the quality of products in a number of businesses, including data centers, gaming, the internet of things, and self-driving cars.

While NVIDIA did propose a remedy to the problems that the CMA found, the regulator said that it would not be enough to fix its concerns. The CMA has ordered an in-depth investigation of the takeover on competition grounds, which will be run in parallel to the national security probe.
