Chinese ports clog following terminal shutdown

Two busiest container ports in China, Shanghai and Ningbo, saw worsening congestion on Thursday after one of the terminals was shut down earlier this week due to a COVID-19 outbreak. Refinitiv tracker showed the worst clogging in Shanghai port in three years and a 40 vessel build-up outside of Zhoushan, up by over 30% in two days.

As the third busiest port in the world, Ningbo, operates on partial lockdown, shipping companies CMA CGM, Cosco Shipping and Hapag-Lloyd released statements announcing vessel reroutings and sailing delays.

Early reports suggest the disruptions in Chinese ports will further strain shipping and supply chains, driving up prices. The effects of the delays could extend towards the end of the year ahead of a busy holiday season.
