Nvidia Corporation has asked the Chinese antitrust regulators to approve the company's acquisition of chip designer Arm Ltd., valued at $40 billion, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Arm has established a partnership with a local venture in China, aimed at developing "energy-efficient" chips, which is what gave Beijing's regulators the right to review the deal, along with the extent of Arm's sales in the Asian country, the outlet explained.

The assessment itself could last anywhere between a year and 18 months, the report noted. Nvidia previously requested acquisition approval from the European Union's and British competition watchdogs.
