Air France-KLM, Total SE, Groupe ADP and Airbus SE announced on Tuesday that they have partnered to realize a long-haul flight using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) made from used cooking oil in France.

An Airbus plane with a 16% SAF mix made by Total took off from Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport to land in Montreal, reducing CO2 emissions by 20 tons according to the companies' statement. The partnership's shared goal is to "decarbonize air transportation and to develop a SAF supply chain in France." "Supporting the emergence of an economically viable French aviation biofuel sector for all the parties involved is a strategic priority for the country and the group," stated CEO of Air France-KLM Group Benjamin Smith.

All French flights will have to be powered by at least 1% SAF by 2022, while the European Green Deal stipulates a jump to 2% by 2025 and 5% by 2030.
