Ford Motor Company and Volkswagen AG said on Wednesday they signed agreements to expand their alliance and collaborate on the production of three commercial vehicle models.

The carmakers noted the alliance will manufacture a total of up to 8 million units, which will include two van models, one built by Ford and the other by Volkswagen, as well as a pickup truck model engineered and produced by Ford but sold by Volkswagen. Furthermore, the partnership includes the development of a Ford electric vehicle for Europe by 2023 based on Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive.

"This collaboration will efficiently drive down development costs, allowing broader global distribution of electric and commercial vehicles, and enhance the positions of both companies," Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess stated.
