Volkswagen AG said on Tuesday that CEO Herbert Diess has apologized for "inappropriate and wrong" statements towards the supervisory board made at an internal event.

The board accepted Diess' apology at a meeting on Monday and noted they "will continue to support him in his work."

Earlier, the carmaker said it decided at the same meeting to replace Diess as CEO of the VW brand and appointed the brand's Chief Operating Officer Ralf Brandstaetter to the position. However, Diess remained the CEO of the Volkswagen Group.
