The United States and other countries opposing the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline cannot stop it from being constructed, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said in an article published on Monday.

Novak stressed that the aim of the project is to "enhance energy security" for Europe as Nord Stream 2 will limit the number of intermediaries and provide stability. He added there is a strong backing for the pipeline within Europe and pointed out that five European companies - Engie, OMV, Shell, Uniper and Wintershall, are all taking part in the project.

Last week, reports said the US threatened it will introduce a new round of sanctions against Nord Stream 2.
