Europe closes mixed, trade, Brexit in focus

Stocks on European exchanges finished trading mixed on Monday. Aside from trade talks between China and the United States set to continue in early October, Brexit developments grabbed the attention of investors.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Sajid Javid reaffirmed Prime Minister Boris Johnson's intentions of taking Britain out of the European Union on October 31 with or without a deal.

The DAX advanced 0.38% as Lufthansa led the gains. Meanwhile, the CAC 40 closed 0.52% in the green with utility company Engie as the top performer. The FTSE 100 declined 0.24%; Reckitt Benckiser tanked 3.80%.

The euro fell 0.36% against the dollar at 5:35 pm CET, buying 1.09005, while the pound gained 0.06% versus the US currency to go for 1.22946.
