UK officials slam Facebook for Amazon forest trading

United Kingdom politicians from the Labour party released statements on Friday condemning Facebook for illegal activity on its Marketplace platform, where Brazilian parts of Amazon forests were sold to people through classified ads service.

"The Amazon is our planet’s green lung and it’s vital we protect it from destruction. Social media companies have a moral duty to ensure their operations are not enabling deforestation and illegal sales of forest. The Government must urgently act to make sure that UK companies do not trade on the back of rainforest destruction," Luke Pollard, Shadow Environment Secretary stated.

Facebook replied to the allegation that it was "ready to work with local authorities", but indicated it would not take independent action of its own to halt the trade as the "commerce policies require buyers and sellers to comply with laws and regulations". The land plots listed on Facebook are reported to be as large as 1,000 football fields.
