Facebook bans Myanmar military from its platforms

Thursday, 25. February 2021 09:13

Facebook announced it banned all accounts of the Myanmar military and all associated media entities from its platforms over "severe human rights abuses and the clear risk of future military-initiated violence."

"Today, we are banning the remaining Myanmar military (Tatmadaw) and military-controlled state and media entities from Facebook and Instagram, as well as ads from military-linked commercial entities," Facebook said in a statement. "Events since the February 1 coup, including deadly violence, have precipitated a need for this ban. We believe the risks of allowing the Tatmadaw on Facebook and Instagram are too great," the tech giant added.

Last week, the social media company took down the main page of the Myanmar military citing posts inciting violence.
