Qualcomm Inc. agreed to purchase tech startup Nuvia Inc. in a deal worth around $1.4 billion, looking to use the Californian firm's technology for its 5G flagship smartphones, the San Diego-based company said in a statement on Wednesday.

Nuvia's silicon processors are set to deliver "step-function improvements in CPU performance and power efficiency to meet the demands of next-generation 5G computing" and "further extend the leadership of Qualcomm Snapdragon platforms," the statement said.

"5G, the convergence of computing and mobile architectures, and the expansion of mobile technologies into other industries are significant opportunities for Qualcomm," Qualcomm Incorporated President Cristiano Amon noted.
