Trading on Wall Street finished with losses on Thursday as the prospects of reaching a deal for additional economic relief before the election appeared weak.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said he believes lawmakers won't be able to reach a stimulus deal before November 3, while House Speaker Nancy Pelosi gave no sign the two parties will agree on something this week. Meanwhile, it was reported the World Health Organization concluded that remdesivir had no major impact on the coronavirus mortality rate.

The Dow Jones closed 0.06% below the flatline with Merck losing 1.76% as the worst performer. The S&P 500 declined 0.15% as Vertex Pharmaceuticals plunged over 20%. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq 100 fell 0.72%; Baidu dropped 4.43%.
