Social media giant Facebook announced on Thursday several steps it is taking to "encourage voting" and put an end to misinformation on its platform regarding the US presidential election, including a ban on new political ads in the week preceding November 3.

"In the week before the election, we won't accept new political or issue ads. Campaigns will still be able to run ads, like get out the vote efforts, but in the final days of an election there may not be time to contest new claims," the company said. According to the article published by CNN, this loophole could, however, allow "political candidates ... to run false ads on the platform up until election day."

Facebook has been scrutinized over its handling of political ads during the 2016 election, including the presence of Russian-sponsored ads on the platform. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been called out by some of his employees and several public figures over his unwillingness to fact-check political speech on Facebook.
