Wall Street opens higher with focus on trade, data

Shares on the United States stock markets started the last trading session of the week higher, hoisted by the trade optimism, as well as the positive jobs data. President Donald Trump said a trade deal with China will be signed on January 15, confirming earlier media reports. In business, Eli Lilly and Co. announced it was buying Dermira Inc. for $1.1 billion.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.09%, with Intel Corp. rising 1.10%. The Nasdaq 100 jumped 0.36%, as Intuitive Surgical increased 4.93%. The S&P 500 advanced 0.22%, with Abiomed growing 1.55%.

The euro slipped 0.08% against the greenback at 9:29 am ET to go for 1.10970. At the same time, the pound stood flat, selling for 1.30688 dollars.
