Asian markets mixed amid RCEP free trade optimism

Asian markets were mixed near the end of the trading day after trading lower earlier in the session as focus shifted slightly from the US-China trade relationship towards talks between the foreign ministers of China, Japan and South Korea as they reiterated their goal of reaching a free trade agreement with members of ASEAN and four other nations by the end of the year. Earlier, United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he sees the trade war with China ending by 2020 while President Donald Trump said at a press conference that someone needed "to take on China."

The Shanghai Composite increased 0.11% at 7:24 am CET and the Shenzhen Composite was up by 0.20% at 7:39 am CET. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng was flat, increasing 0.02% at 7:41 am CET.

The Nikkei 225 lost 0.52% at 7:41 am CET.

The S&P/ASX 200 in Australia dropped 0.89% at 7:41 am CER and South Korea's Kospi gained 0.13% at the same time.

The dollar was up compared to the yen as it traded 0.23% higher for 106.4775 at 7:42 am CET.
