Apple Inc. is set to start trial production of its wireless headphones AirPods in Vietnam as it looks to move some of its production from China amid trade tensions between Washington and Beijing, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on Wednesday citing people familiar with the matter.

According to the sources, Apple's contract manufacturer China's GoerTek will test the "resilience of its manufacturing processes" for the latest version of AirPods, which were only manufactured in China until now, at its audio factory in northern Vietnam this summer. "The initial output will be limited, but it is easy to increase capacity once all the manufacturing procedures are running smoothly," one person said and noted components suppliers were asked not to change the pricing during the test stage.

In June, Nikkei reported that the Cupertino-based tech giant is planning to move between 15% and 30% of its production out of China to Southeast Asia regardless of the outcome of the US-China trade dispute.
