Engineers in Lodz, Poland, are working on an online banking platform for Commerzbank AG, Wirtschaftswoche reported on Thursday, quoting anonymous people familiar with the matter. The entity is being developed with the intention to serve private clients on an international scale, according to the article.

Insiders from the giant German lender's supervisory board revealed the project is scheduled to be finished this year, without any indication so far whether it would actually be launched. The focus is on financial feasibility, the sources said. The tools would be adapted for all target languages in the European Union, the news outlet added.

The future of Commerzbank has been subject to speculation. In September, the government of Chancellor Angela Merkel denied the magazine's report that talks are ongoing to sell the state-controlled stake of 15% to BNP Paribas as part of a merger deal.
