Dow opens 400 pts in red as jobless claims rise

Major stock markets in the United States plunged at the opening bell on Thursday with the spread of the Delta coronavirus variant and its potential effect on the economic activities pushing the negative sentiment.

On the data front, the Labor Department reported ahead of the session that the number of people filing for unemployment insurance for the first time unexpectedly increased in the week ending July 3, further adding to the sentiment.

The Dow Jones plunged 1.11% or 384 points at the opening bell, as Dow Inc. fell 2.06%. The Nasdaq 100 lost 1.39% or 203 points, with Pinduoduo sinking 5.35%. The S&P 500 tumbled 1.25%. Kansas City Southern was the worst performer, dropping 7.23%. The euro gained 0.57% against the dollar to trade for 1.18585 at 9:31 am ET.
