Europe higher at close on vaccination hopes

Major stock markets in Europe closed higher on Thursday as investors are monitoring the rise in coronavirus cases. However, early trial data showed that Johnson & Johnson’s one-shot Covid vaccine is safe and appears to demonstrate an immune response in volunteers. Also, traders are focusing on hopes of fiscal stimulus from the incoming US administration after House members voted to impeach President Donald Trump for a second time.

The DAX closed 0.35% higher with Volkswagen AG jumping by 4.46%. The FTSE 100 went up by 0.76%. International Consolidated Airlines Group grew by 5.90%. The CAC 40 rose by 0.33% as Airbus increased by 4.46%.

The euro lost 0.07% to the dollar, selling for $1.21475 at 5:27 pm CET. A minute later, the pound sterling rose by 0.45% against the greenback, changing hands for $1.36902.
