US opens higher as votes count reaches peak

Major stock markets in the United States opened higher on Thursday as the counting of votes cast in the 2020 presidential elections approaches its end. The focus of public attention is centered mostly on Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada, whose results might determine who the next leader of the country will be. Meanwhile, the economic reports for October showed a decrease in initial jobless claims and job cuts.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average soared 1.41% or 393 points at the opening as Salesforce.com Inc. advanced grew by 2.04%. The Nasdaq 100 rose by 2.16%, while the S&P 500 went up by 1.62%. Qualcomm Inc. was the best performer on both of those indexes, jumping by 10.48%.

The euro advanced by 0.96% against the dollar to sell for 1.18277 at 9:27 am ET. At the same time, the pound sterling gained 0.71% against the greenback to exchange hands for $1.30796.
