Asian markets lower ahead of Trump's China announcement

Asian markets traded mostly lower on Friday ahead of Washington's response to China's contentious national security law for Hong Kong. United States President Donald Trump vowed to respond "very powerfully" to Beijing's measures seen by his administration as a threat to Hong Kong's autonomy.

In Japan, the benchmark Nikkei 225 was down 0.30% at 7:05 am CET. At the same time, South Korea's Kospi Composite declined 0.17%. In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite was flat while the Shenzhen Composite gained 0.65% at 7:25 am CET. Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.52% at the time.

Meanwhile, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 sank 0.65%. The dollar was 0.42% lower against the yen at 7:30 am CET, buying ¥107.188.
