Nikkei ends almost 600 pts down amid coronavirus concerns

Japan's Nikkei 225 finished almost 600 points lower on Friday as indexes in the Asia-Pacific region dropped amid global coronavirus fears. Earlier in the day, China and the United States confirmed a jump in registered COVID-19 patients on Thursday. Meanwhile, the dollar lost ground against the yen which is considered a safe haven asset.

The Nikkei 225 ended 2.72% in the red and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dropped 2.81% at the closing bell. Meanwhile, South Korean Kospi declined by 2.36% at 7:10 am CET.

In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite lost 0.95% at 7:10 am CET and the Shenzhen Composite was down 0.88% at 7:11 am CET. The Hang Seng in Hong Kong fell 2.49% at 7:12 am CET.

The yen remained on six-month lows against the dollar, declining 0.11% and changing hands for 105.90 at 7:15 am CET.
