Asian markets mixed as coronavirus death toll rises

Asian markets traded mixed on Thursday after Chinese health officials reported a new spike in the coronavirus death toll. Overall in China, the number of people who died as a result of the Wuhan coronavirus jumped to over 1,300, while Hubei province experienced a surge in new deaths at 242 for the previous day.

The Nikkei 225 was flat at 4:35 am CET. The South Korean Kospi Composite gained 0.53% at 4:25 am CET.

Meanwhile, Chinese stocks moved lower following the news. The Shanghai Composite fell 0.53% at 4:30 am CET and the Shenzhen Composite lost 0.63% at 4:36 am CET. Hong Kong's Hang Seng was 0.11% lower at 4:45 am CET.

Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was up 0.09% at 4:45 am CET. The dollar dipped 0.18% against the yen at 4:50 am CET, going for ¥109.873.
