Asian stocks retreat amid coronavirus crisis

Asian markets traded lower on Thursday amid continued fears over the spreading of the Wuhan coronavirus. Chinese health officials confirmed 169 people have died from the pneumonia-like virus, while US President Donald Trump received a briefing on the crisis. Meanwhile, the US Federal Reserve held interest rates steady at its latest meeting.

The Nikkei 225 fell 1.56% before the break on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, while the Kospi Composite in South Korea lost 1.03% at 4:20 am CET. At the same time, Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 1.36%. Mainland Chinese markets remained closed.

Over in Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 declined 0.36% at 4:21 am CET. The dollar was down 0.14% against the yen at 4:25 am CET, buying ¥108.905.
