Altmaier: Germany to treat Tesla like all other auto firms

German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier (pictured) said on Wednesday that the country's government has not discussed the possibility of giving Tesla subsidies after the electric carmaker announced it picked the Berlin area as the location of its first European Gigafactory. He also stressed Germany intends to treat Tesla like all other car companies which have factories in the country.

"Subsidies have not yet been discussed. It’s clear that Tesla - if it invests in Germany and creates jobs here, will be treated like all other companies in the automobile and automotive industry," Altmaier noted. "That means we will treat all players who invest in Germany equally and without discrimination," he added.

On Tuesday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company will build its fourth Gigafactory, as well as an engineering and design center in Germany.
