S&P 500 hits new record at open

Trading on Wall Street kicked off in the green on Monday with the S&P 500 hitting a fresh record high at the opening bell.

Walgreens Boots Alliance, AT&T, and Spotify were among the companies whose quarterly results topped expectations during the day. Meanwhile, on the trade front, China and the US appeared to be making progress. Set to debut on the NYSE was Virgin Galactic, Richard Branson's space venture, in a direct listing following a merger with Social Capital Hedosophia Holdings.

The Dow Jones jumped 0.51% or 136 points at the open, while the Nasdaq 100 climbed 0.60%. The S&P 500 beat its previous record high of 3,027.98 points to open at 3,032 points boosted by strong earnings. Microsoft was one of the best performers after the company won a coveted $10 billion defense contract.
