United States stock markets closed with losses on Friday with trading platforms in focus as they limited several securities from trading, after markets turned to extreme volatility in light of a short squeeze mainly caused by active GameStop stock purchases.

The Dow Jones lost 2.03% at the end of the day with Dow Inc falling 4.56%. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 was down 1.93% and the Nasdaq 100 dropped by 2.09%, both led by Charter Communications sliding 7.19%.

The euro traded 0.08% higher against the dollar, changing hands for 1.21348 at 3:59 pm ET.
