Dow jumps 200 pts at open on data, earnings

Stock indexes in the United States opened higher on Thursday after multiple economic data and corporate earnings reports possibly lifted traders' sentiment. Initial jobless claims dropped lower than expected for the week ending January 23, while the gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 4% in the fourth quarter of 2020 and the international trade deficit decreased to $82.5 billion in December. Before the opening bell, Mastercard, American Airlines, Comcast and McDonald's all released their respective quarterly figures.

The Dow Jones gained 0.68%, or 206 points, at the open with Visa, its best performer, rising 3.28% at 9:32 am ET. The Nasdaq 100 added 0.60% as Charter Communications advanced 4.94% at 9:33 am ET. The S&P 500 was up 0.60% in the first minute of trading, as American Airlines led the gains, climbing 25.12% at 9:46 am ET.

The euro was 0.19% higher compared to the dollar, trading at 1.21281 at 9:32 am ET.
