Europe opens higher on Trump's final day in office

Major stock market indexes in Europe opened with gains on Wednesday as all eyes were on the change of administration in the United States. Later in the day, President Donald Trump will leave the White House and President-elect Joe Biden will be sworn-in as president without the presence of his predecessor. Meanwhile, investors were paying attention to economic data releases from the United Kingdom and Germany.

The DAX increased by 0.23% at 9:03 am CET, with Covestro trading 1.24% in the green at 9:05 am CET to lead top performers in the index. The FTSE 100 in London rose by 0.10% at 9 am CET as Pearson jumped 3.45% at 9:12 am CET. France's CAC 40 was up by 0.27% in the first minute of trading. Alstrom was up 1.98% at 9:12 am CET.

The euro rose 0.22% to 1.21541 against the dollar at 9:01 am CET while the pound gained 0.28% compared to the greenback at the same time, changing hands at 1.36734.
