Dow loses 200 pts after open amid data, earnings

Shares on Wall Street were lower after the open on Thursday following the US Department of Labor report on the increase in initial jobless claims, while Procter & Gamble Co., Comcast Corporation and American Airlines Group all posted their latest quarterly results.

Meanwhile, in China, state television announced that a total of 571 people have been infected by the new strain of the coronavirus.

The Dow Jones dropped 207 points, or 0.67% at 9:38 am ET. The Travelers Companies Inc. was the worst performer, falling by 3.29% at 9:34 am ET.

The Nasdaq 100 lost 0.39% at 9:41 am ET. Fox Corp was 2.52% down at 9:43 am ET and led the losses.

The S&P 500 declined by 0.49% at 9:41 am ET with Freeport-McMoRan Inc. plunging 8.30% at 9:32 am ET.

The euro lost 0.18% to the dollar, trading at 1.10741 at 9:29 am ET.
