Volkswagen Group will be fined around €150 million after failing to meet the European Union's emissions targets in 2020, according to the calculation carried out by the Financial Times on Thursday.

Last year, the automaker's emissions in Europe amounted to 99.8 grams of CO2 per kilometer driven, a half a gram over the EU-mandated figure.

Vehicle producers that fail to comply with the rule have to pay a €95 fine for every gram over the limit, multiplied by the number of sold units in the EU. VW sold over 3.6 million cars in the bloc in 2020.
